Recently, researchers have begun to examine whether the beneficial effects of placebos can be harnessed without deception by communicating to participants what placebos are, explaining the science behind how they work, and highlighting how placebos can still provide beneficial effects even if people know they are taking them 4, 5.

However, an important ethical issue prevents their widespread use: the ubiquitous belief that for placebos to be effective, a person needs to be deceived into believing they are taking an active treatment 4, 5. When not writing, Robert can be found engaged in Ham radio, playing/recording music, reproducing Medieval calligraphy and illumination, or doing the gob-smack in his pool.Placebo interventions offer a cost-effective tool to manage a host of clinical disorders and nonclinical symptoms 1– 3. His recent novella, Theopraxis, was a finalist in the 2012 William Faulkner-William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition. Robert has been published in three humor anthologies: My Funny Valentine, My Funny Major Medical, and Open Doors: Fractured Fairy Tales. He was a finalist for the Robert Benchley Society Humor Writing Award in 2011 and a semifinalist in 2012.
